Nestling in the heart of the verdant valley of the river Sarine, Rougemont is an authentic and quiet village where agriculture and mountain crafts go hand in hand and where pastures form one Switzerland’s most emblematic Prealpine landscapes. The old chalets with their sculpted front pediments and richly decorated façades that bear the names of their owners or biblical inscriptions are aligned like a guard of honour. Under the protective gaze of the former Cluniac priory, now a castle, and the famous church with its elongated roof made of tavillons, the village has remained faithful to popular traditions and attracts visitors with its rural and family-friendly atmosphere.
Rougemont is the cradle of paper cutouts. Visitors are immersed in the village's past on a circuit that is embellished with panels. They illustrate the pictures of the famous paper cutout artist Louis Saugy, who got his inspiration from mountain life folklore. The visit can be extended to the workshop of an artist carver, to the Museum of the Old Pays-d’Enhaut (in Château-d'Oex) and to the Minerals and Fossils Museum or simply by enjoying a delicious local cheese such as the mountain cheese L’Etivaz AOC or Tomme Fleurette of Rougemont. The four seasons are equally enjoyable in Rougemont. The village offers direct access to ski slopes, hiking paths and to the pleasures of water, thanks to a typical hotel infrastructure and the famous Goldenpass train that stops there.
