Exhibition - Lovely Chablais! The emergence of tourism through art

Description

Come and discover the exhibition "Lovely Chablais! The emergence of tourism through art" at the Espace Graffenried!

Bordering the south shore of Lake Geneva, crossed by the Rhône and encircled by a multitude of Alpine peaks including the famous Dents du Midi, the Chablais region is renowned for its tourist appeal: its mountainous landscapes, sports destinations, wellness centres and historic sites. "Lovely Chablais! The emergence of tourism through art" brings together visual and artistic evidence illustrating the rise of tourism in our region and throughout French-speaking Switzerland and the Alps between 1850 and 1950. Through three themes - transport, entertainment and accommodation - this exhibition explores the three main driving forces behind the development of tourism in the region, highlighting a variety of objects and artistic media, from postcards and posters to photography, painting and video. The exhibition aims to highlight the golden age of tourism in the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Interest in the region was stimulated by the distribution of books, engravings, posters, photographs, paintings and shows. The exhibition therefore highlights the significant development of the Chablais, and of Switzerland as a whole, with the rise of industrialisation, thanks in particular to the new railway lines, the emergence of medical and health establishments and the development of the mountains as a place for contemplation, sport and leisure.
