Discovering the "Tavillons"

Description

Have you ever seen the roof of a chalet covered in small wooden slabs? They're called "tavillons" !

"Tavillonnage" is a wood-based technique for covering and waterproofing roofs and facades that has been used for centuries in our mountain regions. This ancestral know-how is the trade of the "tavillonneur".

The choice of wood, splitting and preparation of the shingles all take place in winter. We invite you to find out more about this "tavillon splitter" activity. Most of this work is still done by hand, and requires a good knowledge of wood and its characteristics.

You'll meet the "splitters" who will explain their trade and its secrets to you! This is a unique opportunity to meet enthusiasts who practise one of the oldest trades in our region. To discover...
