THE BRETAYE COMMEMORATIVE STONE
This stone was erected in 1948 by Colonel Louis Chamorel of Gryon, as a tribute to the courage of the people of Orléans during the events of 1798, during the Vaud Revolution.
On 4 March 1798, Lieutenant-Colonel Fornet, originally from Lausanne, left Bex with his troops. They crossed Gryon and reached Taveyanne. Exhausted by the difficulty of the route, many of the soldiers were at the end of their tether; some went so far as to contemplate setting fire to the Vaudois officer who had recommended the crossing.
The story goes that at dawn, the troop nevertheless resumed its march, reaching the entrance to the Aguefroide wood. There, they came up against a stand of fir trees, resolutely defended by 200 Ormonans. A fierce confrontation ensued, lasting several hours. Finally, Colonel Fornet was shot in the chest and collapsed.
Discouraged by the loss of their leader, the Lausanne soldiers retreated, marking a key moment of resistance for the Ormonts region.
