Nestled in a spectacular setting, the Alpes Vaudoises offer a unique playground for fishing enthusiasts. From high-altitude lakes with crystal-clear waters to rivers with lively currents, the region is full of spots perfect for enjoying this pastime while respecting nature and local regulations.
Among the area’s gems is Lake Lioson, perched at 1,848 metres above sea level, above Les Mosses. This small glacier-formed lake is especially popular with anglers for its tranquillity and rich waters. Here, you can find the brown trout, rainbow trout and Arctic char – three emblematic species found in alpine lakes. Expect about a 1.5-hour hike from Les Mosses tourist office to reach it. For early-morning fishing, staying overnight at the Lake Lioson restaurant is also an option.
A few kilometres away, Lake Hongrin – larger and situated at 1,249 metre above sea levels – is a sought-after fishing destination set in a wild and preserved environment. This artificial lake hosts a diverse fish population, including pike, perch and various trout species. Water sports are prohibited, helping maintain the site’s peaceful atmosphere and water quality.
Near Villars and Les Diablerets, Lake des Chavonnes offers a peaceful natural setting rich in trout. These fish can also be savoured at the Restaurant du Lac des Chavonnes, a local institution. The lake is accessible by car from Les Diablerets and by train from Villars, followed by a 30-minute walk. Above Les Diablerets, Lake Retaud, reachable on foot or by car, provides another stunning fishing spot. Don’t miss a stop at the Restaurant du Lac Retaud terrace to enjoy a Diablerets trout dish paired with a local white wine.

For river fishing enthusiasts, several waterways in the Alpes Vaudoises are ideal for sport fishing. The Grande-Eau, running through the Ormonts Valley, is a typical alpine river famed for its wild trout. Further north, the Sarine and Torneresse rivers offer varied fishing routes, alternating between calm and fast-flowing sections, with abundant fish populations. In the same region, Lake Vernex near Rossinière is another prized location, known for its natural beauty and excellent fishing conditions.

Also noteworthy is the Leysin fish hatchery, a renowned breeding centre raising about 35,000 trout annually. This facility helps supply high-quality fish to local lakes and rivers while raising public awareness about aquatic ecosystem conservation.

In general, river fishing season runs from the first Sunday in March to the first Sunday in October, while lake fishing is open from the first Sunday in June to the first Sunday in November. Exact dates and permitted fishing hours vary depending on the water body and fish species, designed to protect aquatic ecosystems and promote sustainable fishing. It is highly recommended to consult the official Canton of Vaud document, especially Chapter 6 of the Fishing Guidelines in the Canton of Vaud | 2025–2027 (french only), for detailed information.
It is important to note that fishing is prohibited on Fridays in mountain lakes to allow fragile high-altitude ecosystems to rest. This measure reflects a commitment to responsible and sustainable natural resource management.
A daily fishing permit is mandatory and can be easily purchased online or at regional tourist offices.
