Directed by Philippe de Chauveron
Film summary:
"Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au bon Dieu?" (What Have We Done to God?) is a French comedy that tells the story of Claude and Marie Verneuil, a Catholic, middle-class couple living in the French countryside. They have four daughters and dream of them marrying men who share the same traditions and religion. However, their first three daughters marry a Muslim man, a Jewish man and a Chinese man respectively.
The parents struggle to accept these cultural and religious differences, which creates a great deal of tension but also some very comical situations during family meals and gatherings with their sons-in-law. Claude and Marie then pin all their hopes on their fourth daughter, believing she will finally marry a Catholic man.
But she announces that she is going to marry Charles, a Catholic man… originally from the Ivory Coast. This news causes even more upheaval in the family, especially as Charles’s parents also harbour prejudices.
The film tackles the themes of multiculturalism, religious differences, prejudice and tolerance with humour. Despite the conflicts and awkward moments, the characters gradually learn to understand one another better and to accept their differences.
