Description

The Pic Chaussy peak at 2351m is one of the most treasured summits in the Vaudoise Alps. It’s 360° panorama provides the most incredible views. This ascent is also one of the more popular as much for its easy access as for its route which takes you to Lake Lioson and the Small Lakes.

From the start, located at the corner of the Tourist Office building in the centre of Les Mosses, take the path up through the fields. At the first crossroads (road), turn left and follow the road. At the end of the flat, the road bends to the right. Follow it until you reach a second crossroads. Continue straight ahead, passing to the left of the Pully colony. Continue straight along the road. You will pass the Lioson d'en Bas mountain pasture. If you're an early riser, you can even watch the cheese being made (from 9.30am to 10.30am), otherwise follow the path uphill. At the fork in the road, turn left and continue up the unsurfaced road to the lake, which you reach in 40 minutes. The restaurant on Lac Lioson and its terrace offer a well-deserved break to quench your thirst. Continue your ascent towards the Pic, skirting the lake on the right, before starting to climb the Pic Chaussy. After 35 minutes, you will reach the Col de la Rouge. From here, continue climbing to the left for another 30 minutes to reach the summit of Pic Chaussy. Once at the summit, you can enjoy a 360° view. There's a small picnic area where you can linger and enjoy the panorama: Glacier des Diablerets, Gummfluh, Dents du Midi and even Mont-Blanc. To get back down, retrace your steps to the Col de la Rouge, then continue left towards the Petits Lacs, the valley that runs parallel to the Lac Lioson valley. This rocky region is known for its marmots and ibex, so keep your eyes peeled! Once you reach the Petits Lacs, you may be lucky enough to spot some yaks, those hairy cows with the long horns. Then continue your descent through the mountain pastures to reach the Lioson d'en Bas mountain pasture. Once you reach the cheese dairy, take the small path on the left (through a gate) and follow it to the top of the village. Return to the centre by following the road back down towards the resort.

Practical Information

Caution: Please keep dogs on a leash between Lake Lioson and Pic Chaussy, as there is a flock of sheep with sheepdogs. Option: Possibility to shorten the route by not doing the full ascent of the Pic Chaussy. In this case, at the Col de la Rouge, start the descent directly to the Petits Lacs. Fromagerie du Lioson d'en Bas: Attend a cheese-making demonstration every morning from 9.30 to 10.30 am from mid-June to the end of September for CHF 5.00/pers.
