Description

Accessible in summer and winter, this hike takes you on a journey of discovery along the Sarine. From the charming village of Rougemont, head towards the Rite forest to the Swiss-German village of Saanen.

Your starting point is the tourist office in the centre of Rougemont. The first part of the itinerary takes you through the streets of this village, which is part of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. Famous for its exceptional architectural heritage, admire the facades of these chalets that are more than a hundred years old! After passing the departure station of the La Videmanette cable car, continue your walk through the Rite forest. Can you hear the gentle sound of water? Below you, the Sarine is flowing. This river has its source at the Sanetsch Col before crossing the Saanenland and the Pays-d'Enhaut to finish its trip in Fribourg. On the way, the Rite picnic site awaits you for a well-deserved gourmet break! Get your strength back in this little haven of peace before continuing your tour. The border between the canton of Vaud and Bern is not far away, also known as the "Röstigraben". The Vanel Gorge, in addition to being an unusual natural spot, symbolises this territorial delimitation. At the bottom of the gorge you can see the water rapids that form. In summer, you will see a few rafting boats tackling this technical part of the Sarine. Then leave the forest and reach the small village of Saanen before the famous resort of Gstaad. The route continues to follow the Sarine, named "Saane" by our Swiss-German neighbours. Do you know what that long road on your left is for? If you stop for a few minutes, some strange birds might give you a clue... It is the airport of Gstaad! Finish your walk in the village of Saanen, the capital of this Bernese region! To get back to your starting point, you can take the MOB train or follow a new itinerary. In winter, there's no need to put on your snowshoes! Every time it snows, the route is groomed to offer you a winter walk.
