Description

A sportive ascent to Leysin via the hamlets of Fontanney, Drapel and Veyges, passing through the vineyards of the Chablais to the mountain pastures.

From Aigle station, walk up the rue de la Gare following the tracks of the "Aigle-Leysin" train to the main road. At the intersection, when you reach the main road, turn left and cross the bridge over the Grande-Eau. Drive through the picturesque Fontaine district and then, at the end of the cobblestones, start the climb towards the pretty little village of Fontanney. It takes about 45 minutes from the train station to Fontanney, and you can admire the splendid vineyards and the 12th century Château d'Aigle. After Fontanney, take the path on the left, pass under the "Aigle-Leysin" railway tracks and then reach the hamlet of Drapel. Then, count about 1h15 of ascent to reach Veyges. The path climbs steeply through the forest, following the foot of the Efflot de Veyges cliff. In the old days, this was one of the routes regularly used by the Leysenouds on foot or on donkeys. A stop in Veyges, where the vineyards have given way to pastures, is a must. Cross the street lined with chalets until you reach a tarmac road that will take you to Leysin. After about 30 minutes of climbing, the road joins another one which leads to the station of Leysin-Village. Continue to follow the road from the station, which will take you to the old part of the village of Leysin where you can admire the beautiful old chalets. Continue your walk in the narrow streets between the cheese factory and the village temple. It is possible to reach Aigle by train or to go back down by the SuisseMobile path N°46.
