Fountain de la tour

Description

The Chemin de la Tour fountain is not quite a fountain like the others. It is not carved out of a block of granite, but made of several pieces: two long sides of St-Triphon stone, two other stone slabs at the ends and a separation in the middle of the basin, as well as two steel ties that hold everything together.

It is not possible to date exactly when this fountain was installed, but it is probably a hundred years old, at the beginning of the 20th century, which corresponds to the installation of the drinking water network in the commune after the first water catchments in the upper part of the commune, in the Benjamine region. Of course, over time, this fountain has been cleaned, sanded and modernised by the municipal services. This fountain is now laid on a carpet of cobblestones and looks quite nice. If we now widen the focus, we discover a district which has a real agricultural past and even a solid heritage. Thus this fountain of Crétel d'En-bas is just opposite the farm of the late Pierre-Maurice Cherix, with its dwelling house and the barn just above it. A little further down, at the corner of the street, you cannot avoid one of the oldest houses in Bex, about four centuries old, which is still being converted and is mostly uninhabited. This is also where the famous post office employee Jean Cherix lives. The walk continues one floor above, at the Crétel d'En-haut.
