Chalet with tavillons

Tavillons are fine wooden tiles, in the style of shingles, characteristic of Pays-d'Enhaut chalets.
The manufacture and installation of shingles, on roofs and facades of chalets, is an art. It is even a job, a shingle craftman. This craftsman learns to select his wood and to split each of these fine tiles by hand. In the Pays-d'Enhaut, you can distinguish “tavillons” and “anseilles”. The smaller tavillon shingles are always nailed and are therefore used on more inclined roofs, even on the facades. Simply laid, anseille shingles are held in place with wooden slats. From the first Neolithic dwellings, man used branches then wood to cover his shelter. From as early as the 14th century, tiles were increasingly used. Mountain regions remain loyal to shingles, for transportation reasons and the use of easily-reached forest resources.
